PART 4

Torchwood

         Holly opened the blast doors and stood by to welcome everyone back. First Jack came in, followed by Gwen, then Martha, and then Ianto who blindfolded and lead the mysterious man who was the center of attention from UNIT. Finally, the Doctor came through and Holly nearly tackled him gleefully.
         "Hold on," the Doctor said as he pried Holly's arms from him. "I need to have a proper look at you. How are you out of bed already? And how his that fully healed?"
         "Nanotechnology." Holly answered, and then turned to Martha. "Isn't that right?"
         "Yes, how did you know? That technology is still under wrap."
         "I watch too much sci-fi. And also, that was the only magical healing silver I could think of." Then turned back to the Doctor, she said. "There's something important I have to tell you."
         "Yes well, I think whatever it is can wait."
         "But–"
         "Holly, I thought I lost you. Back in the TARDIS, when you... that was the scariest ten seconds ever and I don't want to relive that anytime soon." He rustled her hair and warm smiled of relief. "Okay?"
         "Fine, but I still got to–"
         "Rest and we'll talk about it later."
         Holly was not going to let him slide so easily, not with something this big that she had to get off her mind. Before he walked away, she blurted it out.
         "The visions are back, but they're different."
         That seemed to have caught his attention.
         He turned to her as his smile thinned and gradually turned into a frown of worry. "What?"
         "The visions are back, but this time is was different. When I was dreaming, it was like I was popping in and out of time to events that have never happened. Events that never should happen. Remember when we were trying to figure out if these visions were a warning? Well I did some history digging while you guys were coming back and everything I saw in the visions were true. The Americas became their own kingdom, not as states of a union. The Japanese landed on the moon. And then there was also the vision of a very dark and hopeless future. A World War Three, but this time with a few added players from outer space. Daleks and Cybermen, and you name it. I saw the destruction of Earth and the end of the human race."
         "How is this even possible? Why you?"
         "How the heck should I know? Oh and, that's not the last of it. The last bit of the dream– Nightmare. Vision. Whatever you want to call it– I was walking down a long hallway, a very rich and fancy one. Like it was in a royal court or palace. The Lord of Time was there. He was sitting in a gold throne chair at the end of the hall. I couldn't see his face since he was completely covered in shadows, but somehow he knew I was there. He caught me and pulled me over to a hourglass and it's exactly the same as the one we saw back with the pirates. But, this was the real one! He said to tell you that it was time to come back home. Doctor, the Golden Hourglass base is on Gallifrey."
         "No. It's just more coded messages."
         "I'm absolutely certain he means it literally to go home. There were two suns, a warm sky, colors of gold and red and I swear I saw the same crest behind his throne. The seal of Rassilon you called it."
         "Holly, my home is gone, trust me on that." He said flatly as he looked away.
         "But time has been rewritten!"
         "Even more of a reason not to show my face anywhere near there."
         Holly knew this conversation was making him uncomfortable as he shuffled his hands into his hair and looking anywhere except at her.
         "Fine, but I'm telling you I'm right. Next question, what's a Zeitgeist?"
         "A Zeitgeist?" He looked back up at her. "Where did you hear that?"
         "He kept calling me that in the dream."
         "Zeitgeist is an old name for 'ghost of time'. I supposed in your current state that's an accurate description. Nevertheless, how does this help? The TARDIS imprinted herself onto you through a spark and is now trying to send you visions of the future, but at what purpose?"
         "I think she wants to warn us how important it is to stop the Lord of Time. To stop Earth's destruction and the unbalance of the whole universe while that nut job is playing god with time."
         "Okay, say once we find him, Gallifrey or not, then what?"
         "We kill him. Even if there's a chance that he's a Time Lord. Even if that Time Lord is you."
         The Doctor was taken aback by the words coming from Holly that he physically had to take a step back from her.
         "Holly, do you realize how... evil that sounds." He said in a hushed tone and dragged her to a more private corner. "You are talking about straight up murder."
         "Oh please, we'll be doing the universe a favor to bag and tag this guy. Him, Ranerik, and any other stinking Agent that has bad blood on them. They are the evil ones here. I've been patient, but this is the last straw. I'm done with being toyed around to their agenda and scraping for whatever information we can dig on them. Heck, I nearly die... well, for a moment... You know what I mean. I'm just saying instead of waiting for more surprises, we go straight to their headquarters and finish this. Heck, they basically invited us to call their bluff. Don't you want to figure out why they are doing this to us? Why they have been stalking our every move and trying to kill us?"
         "Yes, but that is not that way. We can't just go bust some doors down and demand answers. What if it's a trap? Did you happen to think about that?"
         "Of course I did. But, if it really is a trap, then it's the dumbest one they can come up with. I mean seriously. What does he hope to gain by sending you off to somewhere you know is gone? This is what I think: If he truly, without a doubt, thinks he is the absolute Lord of Time he would want to recreate the essences of being a Time Lord, meaning reinventing your whole culture. . So, one can assume that he is telling the truth that he and the Golden Hourglass Agency is really at Gallifrey. Now it may be dust and rock, so maybe he's on a fancy space station or something, but I am telling you he's there and we should bust some doors down."
         "Before we do anything rash, first let me talk to the fellow Martha brought with her, maybe he has some information about Ranerik or anything that has to do with the Agency."
         "Guess I'm not making myself clear enough." Holly was now getting testy and losing her patience trying to reason with the Doctor to see it her way. "I'm done with talking, I want action. I don't want to sit on the sidelines anymore and wait to be attacked again."
         The Doctor's pinned up anxiety hit its pressure point as he lost his calm and shouted at her. "Why all of a sudden are you so persistent to put yourself in danger right after what happened? Do you have a secret death wish?!"
         "I don't have anything left to lose! Do you get that?!" She shouted back, not caring if all of the world could hear her. "He's taken everything from me and you just want to talk some more! That's all you ever do. Talk. Is that what you did during the War? Talked everyone to death?"
         He stepped towards her and pointed his finger at her. "Now you've gone too far."
         "Oh, I'm just warming up."
         "I'm going to forget you what said a moment ago because you are obviously not in your right mind. All I ask is that you stop this destructive path you're on. You can't go making noise for UNIT to follow, so no more hacking or any use of a computer or Karl."
         "Why should I listen to you? You've shot down my other ideas."
         Arguing with her was really taking a toll on him and he just wanted this fight to end. "Holly you need to act dead so Ranerik can slip up and make a mistake. If he thinks you're still alive he'll come after you again. So, no hacking more into UNIT. Not until we have a plan."
         "You just– Arg." Holly scoffed as she stormed off somewhere to vent her frustrations.
         The Doctor sighed heavily as he walked over to join Jack and the gang in their meeting room.
         "She's a wildly one. Fighting a lot?" Jack asked the Doctor as he joined them.
         "Off and on, but that was more of an explosion. At first, I blamed her headaches and the lack of sleep, but I honestly don't know anymore. She has me worried. I honestly think she's bent on this idea that she has to fix everything herself. Did she tell you what she told me?"
         "Only about her nightmares of a maybe possible future of the end the world as we know it and that she needed to tell you how to stop some guy called the Lord of Time. Now, excuse me for not being in the loop, but is this a rouge Time Lord we should be worried about?"
         "Not one that I know, but he seems to know me a lot. Anyways, the thing that worries me the most was what she said. She said that we needed to kill him. Kill. The exact word she used."
         "Well, the guy did order her to be assassinated, I wouldn't blame her. Plus it's a bit like the Old West mentality in the new United Kingdom of America."
         "Yea, she mentioned something about that."
         "Yep, time has definitely been messed around here and frankly I thought you would have been here quicker to fix it. So much has changed and it only seemed like yesterday that everything was normal. Well, as normal as it gets down here. Anyways, as I was saying, what goes around comes back to bite you in rear twice as hard. Where did she go anyway?"
         "Down the hall over there," the Doctor thumbed over his left shoulder.
         "Ah... Gwen, isn't that where the gun range is?"
         "On it."
         Gwen popped out of the room and quickly dashed off to make sure Holly did not do anything harmful. The Doctor sat down across from Jack.
         "So, who's he and what's he doing here?" The Doctor nodded his head towards the UNIT soldier that Martha dragged.
         "Major Charles Carmichael at your service, and can I just say it's a pleasure to meet you in person Doctor."
         "Ah, finally! A UNIT solider that actually likes me. Why exactly do you like me?"
         "I read your files. I know I shouldn't have ever since Ranerik placed them under the Black Files–"
         "What are these Black Files? Holly called them the same thing."
         "Too dangerous and extremely top secret. Basically, it's like those old spy movies. You'll be shot dead if you knew them."
         "And let me take a wild guess. Someone found out that you read them." Jack said as a matter of fact.
         "Yes, but I had to read them. I was in charge of locating you and the mysterious Ghost. Then one evening we had a camera pick up you and some girl at Oxford. Next thing we knew, you and your ship vanished. Ranerik warned me to never let you slip off like that again, so I snuck into the records room and read your files. I figured if I knew you, I could learn your hideouts and who your friends were in order to monitor in case you ever were to make contact. But, the man I read in the files was completely not what I expected to find for someone who was marked as the number one wanted person. You've done nothing but help others in need that could otherwise not help themselves. I had brought this up to Ranerik, but he dismissed the idea. Guess I was onto something if he thought I was a threat to be dealt with."
         "Hmm... Did Ranerik or anyone say why they wanted me so badly?" The Doctor asked.
         "Not really. He's quite a stiff lip about anything except for barking orders and hissing threats. Although, he takes a lot of meetings over the phone. Nothing on recorded and he never used any of the phones in his office for any of these so-called meetings. Maybe on his personal mobile."
         "Well," Jack started to say, "I could put some feelers out there and see if I can pick up any chatter about these black files and if anyone could slip a bug into his room."
         "Or I can talk to my inside man... Wolf... person." The Doctor said. "And he'll do it because he and Ranerik have personal issues to resolve."

~~~
         Gwen found Holly easy enough by listening to the rounds of fire in the gun range. Holly was slamming in a new magazine clip into a .45 pistol when Gwen came by.
         "Figures. Did the Doctor send you to supervise me?" Holly asked without taking her eyes off the gun as she cocked the first bullet into the chamber.
         "No, not exactly. Jack did." Gwen answered as she plucked a pair of noise canceling headphones and placed them on.
         "And here I was thinking he was on my side." Holly said as she aimed and then took a shot.
         "We're all on the same side here, just different approaches to the same goal." Then she tried a different tactic. "That was really amazing what you did today."
         "I don't need your flattery." Holly squeezed off another shot.
         So much for trying to be nice. She thought while trying to think of what to say to get Holly to open up. "Just cut the Doctor a bit of slack. He cares about you and he's just scared, that's all. Frighten that next time you may not be so lucky and die, and then he'll just blame himself for years and years until he's haunted."
         Holly fired for a third time in silence. When she paused to sight down the barrel of the gun to the center of the target, she spoke again, but in a hollow and distant voice.
         "I did die."
         She squeezed the trigger while in her mind's eye she relived the frightening experience of the blade cutting into her, the horrid empty look on the Doctor's face when he realized he couldn't do anything, and the blackness.
         "What?" This was news to Gwen and she did not know what to say.
         "Ten seconds I was dead. At least that's what he said. For me, it was entirety."
         Fifth shot fired.
         "Want to know what I saw? Darkness. Eternal darkness of nothing."
         Sixth shot.
         "No light at the end of the tunnel."
         Seventh.
         "No choir of angles singing or white fluffy clouds where everyone is flying around happy."
         Eighth.
         "Just darkness."
         Holly ejected the clip and laid the gun down, turning to look at Gwen with her penetrating bright eyes that seemed to crackle with hatred.
         "That's when it hit me. When I realized just how broken I was. I have no soul. I'm just a faded memory in time that hasn't gotten washed out yet. Who cares if I just vanish? I have no family, no friends, no one that even knows I used to exist. I'm the ultimate ghost. A time ghost. A Zeitgeist. And it's only a matter of time before I fade away to the world of nothingness. So there you have it. The story of my life: When I did have a family and a life, I didn't exist metaphorically. Now with no family and no life, I'm not meant to exist at all."
         Gwen opened her mouth to say something but didn't know what to say to that.
         "Well? No Chicken Soup for the Soul story to share with me? Say, well, on the bright side I get to travel through space and time in a phone box and see the wonders of the universe that I could only imagine in my dreams or on the TV. But it doesn't matter if no one misses me when I'm gone."
         Gwen glanced over Holly's shoulder to the target she shredded. "You're one hell of a good shooter," she said as she noticed that nearly all of Holly's shots found their way to the center ring in the head portion of the mock human target sheet, which was about three inches in diameter, shooting from a distance of fifteen yards away.
         Holly scoffed a small chuckle. Then with some of the edge lifted from her voice, she asked, "You got a spare room I can rest in? I don't like the idea of sleeping in a hospital bed again."
         "Yea, I'll set one up for you." Then after a pause, she added. "You really should tell him. Everything you just told me."
         "He'll just lock me up and never let me out again in fear of losing me until this gets fixed."
         "He has to know or it'll eat you from the inside. I'll tell him if you don't."
         "Fine. Tomorrow when I've cooled down."
         "And Holly? Everyone has a soul, otherwise what would be the point of all this?"
~~~

         Gwen reentered the meeting room and as hard as she tried to shove Holly's words away, they kept replaying in her head.
         "Gwen."
         "Yea?" She looked up to see everyone watching her.
         "Something the matter? You seem distracted," Jack asked.
         "Is Holly alright? Did she talk to you?" The Doctor asked.
         "Hmm... physically she's perfect. Er, mentally though, you and her need to talk. A serious talk. Not now though. She's resting in a spare room. To be honest she needs a solid good night's rest too. She has been through a lot. A little off topic, but Doctor, where in the world did she learn to shoot a gun?"
         "I can only guess with her dad, he was a military type. Why?"
         Gwen rolled out the target sheet she had snagged from the range. At the top in Holly's handwriting was, 'Ranerik'.
         Jack whistled as they all leaned over to see the nearly perfect round of eight shots through the center ring in the head of the mock body print.
         "I'd hate to be him right now." Martha said and looked up to the Doctor with uncertainty. "So... What do we do?"
         The Doctor got up and walked out without a word. Gwen shouted after him for she knew where he wanted to go.
         "She's on the second floor, five doors down from the ladder."
         By the time he got there, the room was empty. He spotted a small written note Holly had scribbled on.

         'I'm really sorry, but I have to do this. Ranerik must pay. If I get back, I promise you can lector me about how I'm suppose to trust you and let you protect me. This is something I must do. For my family. For the memories he's stolen from me. Most of all, for all of the pain he's caused to others like Dante.'

         The Doctor crumbled the note and left it on the bed as he walked out. He didn't know what hurt worst, the fact that she had completely gone off the deep end to fight this evil on her own, or that she may not come back from this without a stain on her hands. Holly was many things, but a killer was not something the Doctor wanted her to be.
         "She's gone," he said as he came down the stairs.
         "What? But I just left her five minutes ago. How could she just vanish? And where would she go?"
         "Holly's going after Ranerik alone. Gwen, you need to tell me everything and I mean everything she's not telling me."

~~~
         Dante felt a little hurt when he was left out of the party during the rescue operations. While Torchwood was extracting Martha, the Doctor, and the UNIT personal, he had no clue what was going on, he only knew that people were yelling at him to open fire. Just to have an excuse to get away from the fur-less idiots, Dante emptied his clip into a wall.
         "What did you do that for?!" Yelled a soldier with a lot of badges and colors marking some sort of high honored rank that Dante cared nothing about.
         Dante shrugged and simply said, "I thought I saw a rat. I didn't want to catch rabies or the Black Plague."
         The squad leader scoffed and shook his head. "Whatever, go back and guard the prisoner. He can't escape or Ranerik will kill us. And I don't mean that as a figure of speech."
         Dante asked for directions and then was on his way to check up with the Doctor. Of course, by the time he arrived to his cell, the Doctor was gone and Dante was stuck behind enemy lines.
         "Well, this stinks. I wonder how long it would take them to realize they've forgotten about me."
         Dante then took some time to get a feel of the base layout and during his wandering he stumbled on where the TARDIS was locked up.
         "Okay, that makes two of us they forgot to pickup."
         Then, unexpectedly, a phone started to ring. Dante looked around and couldn't see a phone anywhere– anywhere except for the TARDIS herself. Dante stepped up to the blue door, pulled out the phone, and held it to his ear.
         "Hello?"
         "Who is this?" The Doctor asked.
         "Dante."
         "Ironclaw?"
         "Yea. Forgot something didn't you? Big and blue, has the words 'police public call box' on the top. Oh and me by the way. How come I wasn't invited to your little escape party?"
         "Well, I didn't know about it until last second. Now listen up, this is important. Holly's not herself and has gone off after Ranerik alone and I think she's going out guns blazing, no pun intended."
         "What do you mean?"
         "She's armed and very ticked off. I tried to talk her down earlier but I think I only made it worst."
         "Oooh. Wait, and you want ME to stop her? Did you ever think what she would do to me if I got in her way?"
         "Dante, please. I can't let her do this. It'll destroy her. And if she fails, she'll die for certain this time."
         "Okay, I'll keep an eye out for her. As a matter of fact, I was going to go after him as well. I'll just have to beat her to it. Anything else I should know?"
         "Yes. I want answers and Ranerik seems to be higher on the chain than you are. Get him to meet with me without the backing of his play soldiers."
         "Where at?"
         "Cardiff Bay. At the end of the pier. Two hours." Then the Doctor ended the call without another word.
So yea.... this is turning a little dark even for Holly. But what can a girl do? Am I right? And that poor wolf. lol.
